Your baby’s first year is full of milestones that pass by in the blink of an eye. From those first smiles to the wobbly stage of sitting up, each moment is worth capturing. But when it comes to scheduling baby pictures, a few common mistakes can make the experience stressful instead of joyful.
As a baby photographer here in Greensburg, PA, I’ve worked with many families and learned what makes sessions smooth and successful. To help you feel prepared, here are the top five mistakes to avoid when scheduling baby pictures – and what to do instead.

Babies grow and change so quickly! Parents sometimes wait until the last minute, only to find that photographers are already booked up — especially during busy seasons like spring and fall when outdoor family sessions are most popular.
What to do instead: Reach out early, even if you’re not sure of the exact date. Many photographers (myself included) can tentatively hold a spot or guide you on the best timeframe for your baby’s age and stage. For me personally, I only accept 3-4 sessions (of any kind) per month so I can give each family my full attention and make sure your baby pictures are never rushed or squeezed into a packed schedule.

One of the biggest challenges is keeping your little one happy during photos. A tired baby is often cranky or fussy, which makes the session harder for everyone. This is especially important if you have older children who will also be included in the session.
What to do instead: Look at your child’s natural routine and plan the session for when they’re happiest — usually after a nap and a feeding. I always recommend mid-morning or early afternoon for the best results.

Lighting makes a huge difference in the look and feel of your photos. Parents sometimes pick a time of day that works for their schedule, without realizing the light may be harsh or too dim.
What to do instead: Trust your photographer’s guidance on timing. In Greensburg homes, the soft natural light that comes through windows in the morning is ideal. If you prefer outdoor photos, evening “golden hour” gives a warm, flattering glow.

It’s tempting to buy several new outfits or choose trendy pieces, but too many changes can eat up precious photo time. Some outfits may also be uncomfortable for your baby, especially if they are overly formal and/or made of stiff, unnatural fabrics. I can’t stress enough the benefits of keeping outfits SIMPLE.
What to do instead: Soft, neutral colors photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your baby. I recommend no more than 1–2 outfits, plus a swaddle or blanket for variety. Ideally, a plain onesie is best so that I can capture bare baby feet and hands.

Greensburg, PA has four distinct seasons, and each one can affect your baby pictures. A winter session means cozy indoor photos, while spring and fall bring beautiful outdoor colors. Planning without considering the season can limit your options.
What to do instead: Think about the atmosphere you want in your photos. Do you love the idea of soft spring blossoms, warm autumn tones, or a snuggly in-home winter session? Your photographer can help you plan the best timing for the look you’re envisioning.

Scheduling baby pictures doesn’t have to be stressful. By planning ahead, working around your baby’s schedule, and trusting your photographer’s expertise, you’ll end up with beautiful, meaningful images that reflect this fleeting stage of life.
